He (Jesus) said to Simon, “Put out into the deep water and let down your nets for a catch.”
– Luke 5:4
Ike this Sunday has a great message on Luke Chapter 5. It’s a message about faith. It’s a message to remind us that the way we start the Christian life is the way we live through faith and trust.
Hebrews 11:6 reads:
Without faith it is impossible to please God.”
If faith is the only thing that pleases God then it must be important. So what is faith. Faith is like a diamond and is multi-faceted. Simon Peter displays some of those aspects is this story.
He had been out all night fishing and caught nothing. He was tired, defeated, discouraged yet look as his response when Jesus said head back to the deep water.
Simon answered and said, “Master, we worked hard all night and cough nothing, but I will do as You say and let down your nets.”
This verse gives us a 3 Characteristics of Faith that we need to please God.
1. Faith is believing it before I see it.
Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for,m the convictions of things not seen.”
Every thing that God wants to do in your life will start with a vision. Jesus says if you head out to the deep water there will be a great catch.
God gave Abraham the dream of being the father of a great nation. He gave Moses the dream of leading his people out of slavery. He gave Gideon the dream of being a might warrior. He gave Noah the dream of saving his family.
What dream has he given you but you have said “I have to see it before I believe it.”
The second characteristic of faith is: Persisting when I don’t feel like it.
Peter says ” I have worked all night!”
I am sure he was tired. He had been out all night and caught nothing.
I’m sure there were days when Moses didn’t feel like dealing with all the crybabies in the desert. I’m sure Abraham muttered the words “Today God?” I’m sure there were days when Noah was sick of looking at the ark.
Yet everyday they kept the faith and with their actions gave a simple speech that said to everyone ” I believe in you God.”
The third characteristic of faith Peter shows us. Faith is obeying when I don’t understand it.
I’m sure Peter who grew up fishing knew that you don’t catch fish in the hot sun. I’m sure Noah had questions about building a boat in the middle of a desert. I’m sure Abraham wondered how he was gong to be a dad at 99.
Gen 6:22 reads “Noah did everything God commanded him to do.”
Can you says that? There have been many times when God has asked me to do something that I didn’t understand. There have been many times when God has asked to be believe it before I see it. Trust me there are many days in ministry when you just want to quit and throw in the towel.
I think of the Gen. 6:22. I want that said about me too. Marlon did everything that God commanded him to do. I want that badly.
The truth is Peter could have stayed on the dock and said ” Naw I’m good!” Too many believers do that. God gives them a vision and they say “Naw I’m good!” That’s why so many believers walk with God has lost sizzle. They just do the basics and their faith has become yo-hum boring.
When was the last time Jesus got in your boat and said lets head for the deep water? When was the last time you stretched your faith for a big catch? When was the last time you said “Lets go for it?”
I love the fact that our Young Married couples class said lets go for it and have the faith that God will provide the weather for our car wash. I love the fact that they are washing cars for a cure for cancer and yet have no idea how many cars are coming. They are just believing before they see it.
I hope that this Saturday you will bring your car in for a wash. I hope you will support Love Does this month by making a contribution to help fight childhood cancer.
I hope that you will enjoy Ike’s message. It is so good. I hope you go for it and head to deep water.
I am currently working on Taste of Acworth that will take place in downtown Acworth on Oct. 15th. Piedmont will have a tent there. I am working on Christmas at Piedmont that will take place on Dec. 9th and 10th here at the church.
I will have some dates on some cookouts and Acts of Kindness next week. We will be feeding the Tommy Nobis Center on Sept. 29th. I am trying to work with MUST on feeding some of the neighborhoods that need help that week because of fall break for the schools.
I love serving with all of you!
