Storms are just a part of life. I have heard it said that you are either in one, coming out of one, or about to be in one. The question is when you find yourself in the storms of life what do you do? How do you get through it?
There are different reasons we find ourselves in storms. Some storms are from bad decisions or choices we have made in life. Some are because we face a real enemy in this life whom is always looking to steal, kill, and destroy. Other storms are just because we live in a broken world as a result of sin. No matter the reasons you find yourself in a storm remember we have a God whom the wind & waves still obey.
Just look at this time in the gospel of Mark when the followers of Jesus found themselves in the midst of a storm.
35 As evening came, Jesus said to his disciples, “Let’s cross to the other side of the lake.” 36 So they took Jesus in the boat and started out, leaving the crowds behind (although other boats followed). 37 But soon a fierce storm came up. High waves were breaking into the boat, and it began to fill with water. 38 Jesus was sleeping at the back of the boat with his head on a cushion. The disciples woke him up, shouting, “Teacher, don’t you care that we’re going to drown?” 39 When Jesus woke up, he rebuked the wind and said to the waves, “Silence! Be still!” Suddenly the wind stopped, and there was a great calm. 40 Then he asked them, “Why are you afraid? Do you still have no faith?” MARK 4:35-40
In this story we are reminded of 3 things that can help us get through any storm we might face in life.
1. We are reminded that God is always in CONTROL.
It was Jesus’ idea and by his instructions they found themselves in this storm! It was by “His Appointment” they were in the storm. Jesus was asleep and you only do that if you are in control or really trust in the one who is!
2. We are reminded that we are not ALONE.
They were in the storm, but they were “With Jesus”. He was in the boat and storm with them. He had not abandoned, forgotten, or left them.
3. We are reminded God has a PURPOSE.
He can choose to calm the storm or he can choose to calm us, but either way…He wants us to have faith and trust in Him!
So, let go my soul and trust in Him. The waves and wind still know His name!
